medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Learned list-members,
We are probably all familiar with the term "confessio" in the sense of the tomb of a martyr
under the altar of a church (cf. Niermeyer, Mediae Latinitatis Lexicon Minus). I wondered
if anyone knew of any studies of either the practice or the usage of the term, especially
during the 10th c. and later? By this time there were plenty of churches which were not
build over martyr's tombs. Does the term come to apply to the space in the altar which
receives relics?
Thanks,
Meg
