medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear Meg,
Most of the information I have collected on holy wells, springs, etc. has been in the
context of individual sites (hundreds of them!), although there is certainly a
literature specifically on this subject, not to mention the splendid web-sites that
Andre-Yves pointed out to us. Two that I am familiar with are Francis Jones, The
Holy Wells of Wales, which is excellent, and James Rattue, The Living Stream:
Holy Wells in Historical Context (just on England), which is far too positivistic and
"archaeological", and in fundamental respects, seems to miss the point. Many
others are "antiquarian" or "folkloristic" (the study of folklore has changed
dramatically over the past generation, and in a 19th-century context, a description
as "folkloristic" is not necessarily very flattering). There are also studies of the
continent, but I have yet to get my hands on them. Any suggestions for reading by
other list members would be gratefully accepted.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
