This is a subject that is treated, somewhat marginally, perhaps in Thomas Dale's
Relics, Prayer and Politics in Medieval Venetia: Romanesque Painting in the Crypt
of Aquileia Cathedral (Princeton U.P., 1997), pp. 7-11, where he claims that "The
See of Grado, whose patriarchs had been selected from the ranks of the Venetian
clergy since the ninth century, was finally suppressed in 1451, and its jurisdiction
passed into the hands of the bishops of Castello. Aquileia was gradually eclipsed in
the course of the 14th century by Venice, and from 1430 until its suppression in
1751 was a satellite of Venice, much as Grado had been from the ninth century on."
-- a very different situation from that outlined below.
