medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Now, it's your turn to be kind to the elderly. Of COURSE I meant Zodiaque and NOT Pléiade.
In a nutshell, l'Ile-Barbe was the spot where all sorts of medieval religious foundations were clustered. To be more specific, I'd have to do some digging I don't have time for at the moment. I'm not sure when or why (perhaps the Revolution) these institutions crumbled. All I know is that some really gorgeous stuff is now in private hands and behind very tall gates. Have you "dogpiled" Ile-Barbe?

o.k., now Be Kind to the Elderly, as they try and reload some 35 year old
memories into a much-impaired Human Interface hardware.

yes.
they *were* in the Musée [des Beaux-Arts, i think], when i first saw them in
about '69.
then i *think* that i saw them again, very briefly, in about '87, also in the
MBA.
>In the church itself, there are stunning pilaster carvings, some of quite
secular bent.
don't think those are they --not secular, for sure.
and 12th c., rather modest to look at (in a redish stone, i think) --under
life-size, among other things, as befits modest cloister sculptures.
>The only place I've seen great close-ups and discussions of them is in
_Lyonnais, Savoie...romans_
now, a few years ago i heard a rumor that they were published in the *Zodiac*
["Nuits de Temps"] series, in the volume _Lyonnais romane_.
which is, of course, the only volume in the series which my library doesn't
have.
>in the Pléiade collection.
Zodiac, surely.
the Bibliotheque de la Pléiade is text only, mostly literature.
>I remember some great stuff in the museum, all coming from Ile-Barbe (now the
astronomical rent district of Lyon), but not specifically from the cloister of
Ainay.
o.k., that's them.
or those are they.
them are the ones.
from l'Ile-Barb.
from shear lack of trying, i was never able to get straight the relationship
between l'Ile-Barb and St. M. d'Ainay.
looks like i need the Lyonnais roman volume --though the photographs in that
series are generally pretty crappy, for sculpture at least (grainy,
dramatically lit), as opposed to those of the more photogenic buildings.
thanks for the effort, MG.
