To add to the confusion...
I have translations of Mallius' eyewitness accounts of the re-burials of the first four Leo's in 1607 (translated by our own Phyllis Jestice) that refers to Leo III as a saint...
"The marble sarcophagus was re-closed, with the inscription "The bodies of Saints Leo I, II, III, and IV, High Pontiffs and Confessors."
And in the other research I did Leo seems to be referred to as a saint way before his actual canonization. I would think, though, that an inscription on a tomb would be carefully accurate, and not group all the Leo's in as saints.
