medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
One of these martyrs was Sainte Blandine (Blandina in English, I suppose). There is a lovely chapel dedicated to her in the abbatiale Saint-Martin d'Ainay, a stunning Romanesque basilica in the heart of Lyon. See: http://notes.romanes.free.fr/images/rhone/lyon/ainay/photos.htm
A sidenote: this church is mentioned in Rabelais's _Gargantua_. Pantagruel's tutor had an inkwell as fat as the columns of Ainay ("Enay" in Rabelais). These columns were "salvaged" from ruins of a Roman temple on Ile-Barbe.
Gargantua's tutor "portoit ordinairement un gros escriptoire . . . duquel le gualimart estoit aussi gros et grand que les gros pilliers de Enay . . ." The name of this "sophist" is Thubal Holoferne, "Thubal" being the name of a descendent of Cain "qui inventa, selon la Bible, l'art de travailler les métaux . . ."

martyrs of Lyons (d. 177) One of the most famous groups of early
martyrs, thanks to a very graphic contemporary letter describing
their trial and deaths (perhaps written by Irenaeus). The Christians
(at least a dozen of them) were attacked by a lynch mob, but rescued
and put on trial. The ninety-year-old bishop, Photinus, died in
prison from the mob's ill treatment; the rest were thrown to the
beasts in the amphitheater.
