doubt a little bit, because Abelard has never been in Normandy.
i was going on the assumption that "Calvados" --apple brandy-- was much, much
more widespread, en ces temps la, than it is even today.
i've had some very nice "Calvados" in private homes in Chartres, offered by
residents who had farm folk relatives in the Perche (West and South of
Chartres, South of Normandy proper) and, i believe, in Brittany.
in the '80s of the last century of the last millennium one could still see the
ruins of rather extensive orchards on the plain accross the valley from the
cathedral ; and i *believe* i've seen a cadastral reference to some of those
having belonged to the Bishop.
i rather strongly suspect that, in previous epochs, all those apples did not
go into pies, but were put to more productive (albeit less patriotic) uses.
Abelard's friend and supporter, Bishop Godfrey ("of Leves") of Chartres could
easily have slipped him a jug or two of Chartrain "Calvados" on various
occassions when his coffee was in need of a bit of Fortification ; say, at
some council or other where the obnoxious "Saint" Bernie was playing with
matches uncomfortably close to some of A.'s books.
difficult to document, of course, but certanly a plausable occurance.
(Abelard, presumably, supplied his own coffee.)

yes, that would probably be a judicious way to do it.
