in this context, i would be interested to hear Your Learnéds opinion of this
rather unusual iconography of one of the Temptations, found in the capital
frieze of the royal collegial church of St. Mary of Etampes (between Chartres
and Sens, c. 1150) :

(the scene on the right. sorry for the obnoxious pop-ups.)
depections of Jesus being *held* in the arms of Sathanas while being shown the
Riches of this World are quite rare --i know of only a few other examples,
all, i believe, later than the Etampes exemplar.
would anyone venture an opinion about what sort of statement, re this business
of "Justice", is being made here?
if any.
best from here,

"We are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then,
when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show
that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry on this process
for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that sooner or later a false
belief bumps up against solid reality, usually on a battlefield." --George
Orwell, "In Front of Your Nose," 1946
