medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. April) is the feast day of:
Aphrodisius and companions (1st cent.??) Gregory of Tours tells an
exotic legend to the effect that Aphrodisius was an Egyptian who
sheltered the Holy Family during the flight to Egypt. He is later
supposed to have made his way to Languedoc (doubtless along with
Lazarus, Mary, and Martha), where he was martyred.
Valeria and Vitalis of Milan (1st cent.??) This couple had a popular
cult in Milan for centuries as the parents of Sts. Gervasius and
Protasius. Unfortunately, they seem to be invented figures. The
cults of both were suppressed in 1969.
Theodora and Didymus (d. 304) The subject of early, apparently
genuine acta. Theodora was a young woman (virginal and lovely, of
course) of Alexandria. She was sentenced to a brothel by an
unsympathetic official during the great persecution, but was rescued
by the non-Christian Didymus (who then converted, and they were both
happily martyred together).
Prudentius of Tarazona (d. c. 700) Prudentius was from Basque
country. He spent several years as a hermit, then became a priest
(later bishop) at Tarazona in Aragon.
Adalbero of Augsburg (d. 909) Adalbero was a monk of Ellwangen,
uncle to St. Ulric. A. restored the monastery of Lorsch and was made
bishop of Augsburg in 887. He became Arnulf of Bavaria's chief
advisor, tutor to his son Ludwig, and regent for Ludwig after a noble
plot kept his mother (although designated for the post by Arnulf)
from holding the regency.
Adaldag (d. 988) Adaldag was a Saxon, a canon of Hildesheim. He
became bishop of Hamburg-Bremen in 937 and was an important
missionary in Denmark.
Luchesius & Bonadonna (blessed) (d. c. 1260) L and B were a married
couple from Poggibonsi near Siena. They were merchants, but in c.
1221 became Franciscan tertiaries and took to penitential lives that
included nursing people in the hospital.
