Dear Radstats-ers,
Please remember to book in advance for the upcoming conference so we have some
sense of numbers.
If you book very soon you still have time to include a farewell donation to
Pete Latarche, our Radstats administrator, for his Cuba Riders Appeal, before
he goes to Cuba on 12th Feb. See the back of your latest Radstats
newsletter, "The Violence of the Iraq War" (also on www.radstats.org.uk) for
details. Today or tomorrow we will be posting a new address for bookings on the
website, so that Pete can handover the process before he goes. This will mark
the beginning of term for our new Administrator, David Symes, whom we are very
pleased to welcome on board. Note the [log in to unmask] will be re-directed
so if you use that address for enquiries it won't get lost in the cracks. But
if your booking form arrives at Pete's (the current) address before 12 Feb. it
won't get logged in time for the conference.
Please spread the word about this fantastic conference. We haven't held it in
London for a while, so there is reason to expect higher numbers than usual.
Please forward the reminder notice below and post the paper announcement (link
at bottom) in a visible place, especially if you are London based. If you
forward to an email list please let the troika ([log in to unmask]) know
where, so we can keep track of publicity.
Looking forward to seeing many of you there!

PRIVATISATION: POLICIES AND STATISTICS
Privatisation is changing not only the face of publicly funded
services, but also their infrastructure and the way statistics can be
compiled. To monitor the impact of these changes on service providers and
users, reliable statistics are needed, but these are not readily available.
Changes in the way statistics are compiled makes it difficult to compare the
situation before and after changes. Added to this, information which used to
be in the public domain is disappearing from view as it becomes 'commercial
in confidence'. This year's Radical Statistics conference explores these
problems, with examples taken from a range of services and areas of our
national life.
Our keynote speaker, Professor Allyson Pollock, is Chair of Health
Policy & Health Services Research, UCL and Dir. of Research & Development at
UCL Hospitals NHS Trust. Prof. Pollock's work on the private finance
initiative has been of high profile. She has given evidence to the Health,
Transport, and Treasury Select Committees of the House of Commons, and to
the Finance Committee of the Scottish Parliament. She has also co-written
articles on the impact of the WTO and GATS on health and other public
services.
