Richard
Lawrence, in "Mines of the South Wales Coalfield" has this
to say:
WERNDDU COLLIERY
Caerphilly, Rhymney Valley.
In 1873 the Cardiff and Black Vein Company sunk two pits on the site of the
old Wernddu
or Van Level. In 1888 the pit was working the Black (Nine-Feet), Big
(Four-Feet), Big Rock
(No.1 Rhondda) and Little Rock (No.2 Rhondda) seams, and by then it was
owned by the
Caerphilly Coal Company. The Wernddu Coal and Brick Company Limited took
over the
colliery in 1893, and by 1895 employed 36 men there. The original mine was
closed in 1908,
and by 1912 the New Wernddu Colliery employed 10 men working on the surface
of the mine
and 93 men working underground producing house coals. It was not listed in
1913, but shown
again in 1917 and 1921. Not listed in 1932.
