The Whitfield area in Allendale was lead mining territory.
Certainly a John Cookson had connection with mining
activity at Fallowfield, which although in the North Tyne
Valley is not far away. The Cookson family are well
known in connection with local industrial activity.

Subject: Some Questions - Cories, Mines near Whitfield & The Halkyn Mine
Kibble Tally Board.
Can any list members help me with the following questions;
1) Corie - Can anyone tell me what exactly a "corie" is? I know that it was
used to describe a measure of coal. Initially I thought this term may be a
regional variation on the word corf or corves but I have come across a
document which mentions both corves and a corie in the same paragraph
implying that they are to different measures?
2) Whitfield - Does anyone know if there is a record of coal mining (or
other minerals) in the village and/or parish of Whitfield in Northumberland.
I am particularly trying to track down any mining operation which may have
had connections with a MR. J.C. (John Cookson? of Newcastle & Cumberland) at
WHYTFEILD (sic) in 1739.
3) Kibble Tally Boards - Does anyone have a good photo of the wooden tally
board (AKA Dolly board) that exists in Halkyn Mine (see British Mining
Memoirs No.59, 1997, Page 10) that I could use (with full credits) as an
illustration on the NMMA web site. A photo of a similar board from any other
mine would be equally suitable.
