MUSEUM OF LONDON Study day
Re-building the past: what can replicas tell us about past reality?
Saturday 18 September 2004
10.00am-4.30pm
'Living history' is increasingly popular. Many re-enactors and makers of historic replica objects use museum collections as a resource. Documentary makers use historical reconstructions to bring the past alive. Can these experiences give us new information beyond the reach of professional archaeologists and historians or are they creating a fiction?
This fascinating study day will bring together museum professionals, historians and educators with re-enactors, living history performers and craftspeople to find out what can we learn about the past from reconstructing historic objects, practicing historic skills, wearing historic dress or re-enacting historic events. Find out if reconstructions can tell us more or different kinds of information about life in the past, and what implications this has for the way museums interpret and present the past.
Speakers include:
Gavin Baldwin, Lecturer in History Education, Middlesex University, author of Living the Past
Tristan Bareham, Archaeologist, and Manager East Sussex Archaeology and Museums project
Sally Doganis, documentary maker, executive producer of 'The Real Olympics', Channel 4, July 2004
