We have come across a AML patient treated with chemo who not surprisingly
had elevated urate level of 1080 umol/L due to the reduction in tumour cell
mass and the resulting increased turnover of DNA and purine metabolism. The
patient was treated with Rasburicase (may not have spelt this correctly as I
can't find it in the BNF) to reduce urate and minimise the potential of
glomerular damage. The urate dropped to 0 umol/L in 24 hrs. Does anyone know
whether this is an expected physiological effect of the drug or whether it
is affecting our Roche Modular Urate method which is uricase based. The drug
is not mentioned in the kit insert.
Any ideas
Cheers
John
