As far as I can remember there is also a difference between stability of total HCG and free beta HCG...

Tricky. Stability of hCG varies between methods depending on their cross
reactivity with the beta sub unit, as the sub unit is generated from
degredation. I've seen this when doing method comparison work. I do also
remember seeing a paper showed that hCG is less stable in whole blood
than serum, I think because there is something that chops up the hCG.
But I haven't seen the effect personally.

Subject: AFP, HCG stability for Down's screening
I would be very grateful for information on the long-term stability of
AFP and HCG for the purpose of Down's syndrome screening risk
assessment. Any information on stability of separated serum specimens
stored at room temperature, refrigerated (4 - 8 degrees C) and frozen
(-15 to -20 degrees C) for up to 1 month will be useful in responding to
a clinical incident. Also, I would be grateful for any information on
the effect of long-term contact with serum separator gel (BD
vacutainer).
