Dear all
Many of the posts on this list contain discussions that perhaps would be
useful to a more public and possibly printed medium. I don't mean the
daily newspapers but more specialist things read by statisticians where
the points will generally be understood. Recent threads have been on
competitive sport and obesity, the statistical properties of voting
methods, immigration, vCJD etc.
While contentious views and arguments are not suitable, where there is a
clear and simple point to make, can I ask people to consider writing (ie
emailing of course) letters to RSS News - I am letters editor in another
hat - and I will consider publishing them.
The email address for letters is [log in to unmask] We look for
fairly short correspondence - about 250 words is a usual maximum but
exceptions can be made.
The advantage is that, though mailing lists are useful, they are
transitory and only seen by the subscribers. Printed material is archival
and will reach a new and probably wider audience. RSS News goes to each
member - and there are over 7000 worldwide.
You may also consider writing to the new and much praised magazine
Significance - issue 5 now being planned is on Statistics and the Law and
although there is no room now for contributions but letters can be sent up
to 10th Jan.
The email address is [log in to unmask] and the editor is Helen
Joyce.
Note that you don't have to be a member of RSS to send letters to either -
much as you don't have to buy the Grauniad to write to that organ. Of
course you won't see your published thoughts, consequential letters or
articles unless you already are a member or can badger someone who is...
Best wishes
John
