Dear Dr. Tonkinwise,
It seems tp me you are mixing apples and sheep in this sentence.
>>After all, philosophy is the job of philosophers...
>
>The problem is that philosophers do not understand
>design. It is not what designers can learn from
>philosophy, but what philosophy needs to learn from
>design.
Designers and philosophers may both learn something from each other and from
their respective fields.
Philosophy has no "needs." Neither does "design."
To clarify issues, we require clear language, treating like objects in
similar ways, and recognizing the process or activities appropriate to the
different entities we describe.
To say that "philosophers do not understand design" suggests a gap in your
understanding of philosophers.
Charles Saunders Peirce, John Dewey, and several others understood design
process issues quite well.
