These fall into two categories: (1) those that differ from page and
screen decorators in that they recognize graphic design as a tool for
larger organizational goals and can think about design in strategic
terms and (2) those that are either self-important but mindless or
those have realized that the general reputation of graphic design is so
dismal that they need some way of saying, to quote Dr. Gonzo: "You can
trust us. We're not like the others" even though they -are- like the
others.
There are also design strategists. They are few and far between but
they are people with real understanding of the power of graphic design
who can advise clients on harnessing the great (but not particularly
strategic) talents of those who excel at the "'Art and Craft' design
traditions."
