I run a collaborative Information Design project for First Years -
Root 2, Root 5 and the Golden Mean
They have 3 x A3 sheets to cover the historical, cultural and design significance of the three concepts.
They have to determine their audience.
It is a soft introduction to the functions of ratio etc in design. Working together they generally overcome their personal fears of failure when confronted with anything mathematical.
I'd be interested in know other projects that people use to break this thick piece of ice.
