Some staff in branch libraries already do some floorwalking to some extent, asking those readers who look a liitle lost as to how they could be helped. Staff are often approached when away from counters, shelving or working on stock.
As regards joining people, I don't consider it to be a menial task. It may be one that library staff repeat several times a day, but the reader only joins once, so how we deal with each particular person and what information we give them about our services is absolutely crucial.
The same applies to a "simple" request for a title - that information may be vitally important to that individual, so should not be treated as a mere "menial" task.
