Ubicomp Education:
Current Status and Future Directions
a workshop to be held at Ubicomp 2003
12th October 2003, Seattle, USA
http://ubicomp.lancs.ac.uk/workshops/education03
Submission Deadline: 15th August 2003
Overview
--------
Over the last few years ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) has emerged as one of
the fastest growing research areas in computer science. At its core is a
vision of computational devices and digital services that blend into the
environment where they become an integral part of people's everyday
lives and experience. The increasing importance of ubiquitous computing as a
research discipline and its potential social and economic implications
creates demand for comprehensive ubicomp education at universities. However,
while ubicomp-related courses are taught at several universities on a more
or less regular schedule, there is no common understanding on the scope and
boundaries of ubicomp education. Although this is in part a reflection of
the general state of ubicomp as a fast growing and still relatively new
research discipline, we feel it is time to review the current state of
ubicomp education and to create a vision for its future. The main goal of
this workshop is to review the current state of ubicomp education and to
share actual teaching experiences as well as collecting the lessons that
have been learned by individual instructors. It is aimed at educators who
are actively involved in teaching ubicomp topics and who are interested in
shaping the future of ubicomp education.
Particular issues to be addressed include:
- What should we be teaching? Which, theories, principles, models and
frameworks are considered essential for ubicomp?
- How should we be teaching ubicomp? Which educational approaches and
learning pedagogies are appropriate for ubicomp education?
- How should ubicomp be positioned in relation to existing Computer Science,
Electrical Engineering and HCI curricula? Is there a need for separate
ubicomp courses or should ubicomp-related topics be subsumed in existing
courses?
- What resources are required and available to enable educators and
learners? Which books, course materials, web sites, videos, software
libraries and hardware toolkits exist or should exist for teaching ubicomp?
- What is industry looking for? Which ubicomp related skills and knowledge
do employers and companies require now and in the future?
This workshop will be the first of an ongoing series of international
workshops aimed at shaping ubicomp education.
Workshop Format
---------------
The workshop will be limited to 20 participants. In lieu of a traditional
position paper, participants are asked to submit a completed questionnaire
(details see below). We plan to use the submitted questionnaires as the
first stage in developing a ubicomp education resource web site.
To maximize information and idea exchange and foster collaboration, we plan
to spend most of the time on discussions rather than presentations. The
primary activities at the workshop will take place in small working groups
made up of 3-4 people. Presentations will be short and relate specific
lessons learned. They will be selected by the organizers from the submitted
questionnaires.
Desired Outcomes
----------------
The workshop is intended as a forum for the exchange of educational
experiences and is focused on the joint development of a common vision
statement derived from the experience of each of the participants. The
expected results include:
- The compilation of currently offered ubicomp-related courses
- The definition of core ubicomp teaching modules
- The establishment of an evolving clearinghouse of ubicomp teaching
materials
Submission Details
------------------
The workshop organizers will select participants and presenters based on a
review of submitted materials. In lieu of a traditional position paper,
participants are asked to submit a completed questionnaire that relates to
their experiences in teaching ubicomp courses. The questionnaire is
available in html and text format. All submissions should be sent to
[log in to unmask] by 15th August 2003 (one week later than previously
announced).
- Deadline for submission: 15th August 2003
- Invitations to participate and present: 22nd August 2003
- Workshop: 12th October 2003
