Urgent: 3-year fully funded PhD Studentship - Mobile and Ubiquitous User
interaction
A three-year fully-funded full-time PhD studentship in the Department of
Computing at the Open University is available immediately. Applications by
20th August 2003.
This PhD project will focus on the task of navigation (i.e. finding physical
locations) using spatial audio. The project will involve designing,
prototyping and testing novel user interfaces for navigation using spatial
audio user interaction, and complementary approaches as necessary.
Spatial audio techniques can be very simple, e.g. use of simple stereo sound
- but more sophisticated techniques are possible, e.g. using headtrackers
and auditory-VR techniques. Various tracking technologies are available for
this project including GPS devices, head trackers, a Polhemus, and other
sensing devices.
You should be a capable programmer. Interest in and knowledge of Human
Computer Interaction is essential. Commitment to empirically evaluate your
interfaces is essential.
An interest in, or experience with, mobile and ubiquitous computing devices
would be an advantage. An interest in audio or music would be helpful.
At this stage, the arena(s) in which navigation tasks are to be considered
are open-ended - we have useful connections for facilitating work variously
on foot, motor vehicles and on boats. Regular access to a yacht is
available. The project is capable of development either for sighted users
(as a minimum attention interface) or for visually impaired users.
This Ph.D. studentship is available immediately; students would normally be
expected to begin on 1st October 2003. Prospective students are urged to
contact one of the supervisors (see below) for informal discussions, and to
complete an application form, which should be submitted by 20th August 2003.
