Maria,
I also think that understanding globalization through a disability prism, as well analysing disability through a globalization critique- are highly important, and these frames of thought are much lacking at the moment. It is hard to parsuade disability rights activits to connect local struggles to include a broader perspective that will offer resistence of global ills that are underpinning the lack of rights for people with disabilities world wide (issue like open makets vs. welfare state; trade agreements; foreign policy etc.).
It is equally hard to insist that disability related issues will be incorporated within anti-globalization movements. I have no answers on how to incorporate these two very related issues, but I do think it has to be a dual effort.
I do have an example on how to make it happen. The latest SDS conference had a session on the relation between the world bank and people with disabilities. I refer you to the speech given by the excellent Robert McRuer from that session, which is available online. http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=47&ItemID=3905
In solidarity

Subject: WTO in Montreal
Hi
Just went to my 1st anti-globalization (WTO) Demonstration. It was great!
Nothing well plan like ADAPT, not very accessible. But since I had my
motorize chair, mobility wise, it went well. I could not get much of the
speeches. If I had been on cane this would not have worked.
And a kid young enough to have just been born when I went to my first few
demo, was "patronizing enough" to warn me that a fight was about to break,
maybe I should move, he said.
Issues of disability and globalization were missing. Do these get names and
anywhere except Europe? (I'm saying Europe, not UK.) I heard that in Italy
the issues were heard as well. I'm curious, how do you get them on the
agenda?
Maria
