medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (21. June) is the feast day of:
Lazarus (1st cent.) The poor man of Luke 16: 19-31. I hadn't realized
that the lazar houses and Order of Lazarus of the Middle Ages were named
after him, rather than his resurrected namesake.
Eusebius of Samosata (d. c. 379) Eusebius was bishop of Samosata
(Comagene, Syria) was a noted opponent of Arianism, stubbornly speaking in
favor of orthodoxy at Arian-dominated councils, trying to reconcile the two
sides, etc. In the period of Arian dominance under Emperor Valens, E.
travled not just in his own diocese but around Syria, Phoenicia, and
Palestine in disguise, encouraging the orthodox to resist Valens'
persecution. He finally annoyed the authorities enough that in 374 he was
exiled to Thrace. E. returned to his diocese when Valens died in 378, but
didn't last long---he died soon after an Arian woman had dropped a tile
from her rooftop onto his head.
Alban of Mainz (d. c. 400) Alban was a Greek priest. After he was exiled
from Naxos by the Arians in control there, A became a missionary in
Germany---until he was attacked and killed by Arians in Mainz. According
to legend, he is another head-carrying saint.
Mewan (6th cent.) Mewan was a native of south Wales. He was a disciple of
Samson. As the companion of St. Austell, M. migrated to Brittany, with a
long pause in Cornwall to found churches. The cult of M sperad throughout
France, and pilgrimages to his shrine at Saint-Meen were common.
Dominic of Comacchio (d. after 820) Dominic's claim to sanctity is that he
was a thief---a pious thief of relics. He was a Benedictine monk at
Comacchio, near Venice. According to legend, he went on pilgrimage to the
Holy Land and while in Alexandria found the opportunity to pilfer away the
relics of St. Mark, which of course then became the prized possession of
Venice.
