medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. June) is the feast day of:
Basilides of Alexandria (d. 205) Eusebius tells that Basilides was a
soldier in the service of the prefect of Egypt. When ordered to execute
St. Potamioena, though, he protected her from the malicious spectators and
was converted himself. Executed soon after she was.
Emiliana (?) A rather funny saint case. There is a church dedicated to
St. Emiliana in Rome, but it's suspected that the dedication actually came
from a street name.
Martial of Limoges & companians (d. 250?) Martial is believed to have been
the first bishop of Limoges; Gregory of Tours tells that he was one of
seven missionary bishops sent from Rome to Gaul. He was later claimed as
one of the 72 disciples of Christ.
Alrick (12th cent.) Alrick was an English hermit, a disciple of St. Godric.
Arnulf of Villers (d. 1228) Arnulf was born in Brussels. He indulged
himself while young, but spent the rest of his life repenting for it as a
Cistercian lay brother. He was famed for the depth of his contemplative
prayer.
Ramon Llull (d. c. 1315) Ramon Llull was a well-educated layman. After he
had a vision of the crucified Christ, he became a Franciscan tertiary and
devoted the rest of his life to converting the Muslims. He wrote (an
immense amount) and travelled all around Europe trying to get support for
his mission. He also founded a school fo the study of Arabic on Majorca,
and three times went to Tunis to preach---only to be deported. There is a
legend that he didn't make it back the last time (that he was stoned), but
it is much more probable that he died on the ship home of natural causes.
