medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. June) is the feast day of:
Mark and Marcellian (d. c. 290) According to a fifth-century account, M
and M were twin brothers of noble Roman birth. They were condemned in the
Great Persecution, but given a thirty-day reprieve in the hope that they
would apostacize. Despite the pleas of parents, wives, and children, they
didn't give in (or they wouldn't be on this list) and were executed.
Elizabeth of Schonau (d. 1164) Elizabeth entered the Benedictine convent
of Schonau when she was 11 or 12. She soon started having mystical
experiences, which continued for the rest of her life. She became abbess
in 1157, serving until her death at the age of 34.
Osanna of Mantua (blessed) (d. 1505) Osanna was the daughter of a wealthy
patrician family of Mantua. She started having visions as a young child.
Parents were tolerant, but went on to arrange her marriage. She held out
for a life of virginity, though, sneaking away to take vows as a Dominican
tertiary and then arguing against marriage until her pious parents gave in.
O. spent the rest of her life at her family home, making it into a
spiritual center for the area after her parents had died. She was a noted
mystic, learning to read miraculously and receiving the stigmata.
