medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. June) is the feast day of:
Abraham of St-Cyrgues (d. c. 480) Abraham was a Mesopotamian by birth. He
went to Egypt, where he was attacked by thieves and ended up being held
captive for five years. After he escaped, apparently wanting to get as far
away from Egypt as possible he went to Gaul, settling as a hermit near
Clermont. Eventually A became abbot of the nearby monastery of St-Cyrgues
(St. Cyriacus).
Landelinus (d. c. 686). Landelinus (Landelin) was raised by a saintly
bishop of Cambrai, but went and became a robber when he grew up. Thanks to
his mentor's prayers, he repented, and took up a penitential life, at first
in a monastery and then as a hermit. He attracted disciples and in time
formed them into the monastery of Lobbes--but L. himself refused to become
abbot and instead went away and became a hermit. Disciples gathered, and
before long he had founded a second monastery---before fleeing to a deeper
forest to get away from all the attention.
Edburga of Winchester (d. 960) A daughter of Edward the Elder of England,
Edburga's parents made her a nun at a young age. She died young of a
fever, and seems to owe her odor of sanctity to her royal blood.
Bardo of Mainz (d. 1053) Bardo was a well-connected German aristocrat. He
was educated at Fulda, where he became a monk. His family connections to
the empress led to his appointment as abbot of Werden in 1029. In 1031 he
became abbot of Hersfeld and archbishop of Mainz. Bardo is a good example
of the Ottonian-Salian imperial bishop at his best: he served as chancellor
and was very active politically, but lived a life of personal austerity and
found time to administer his diocese well, especially noted for his love of
the poor.
