medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Marjorie,
The cross in question, I believe, was a "Gabelkreuz", i.e. a
particularly gruesome crucifixion sometimes included among the
extreme German images grouped together as "Andachtsbilder". This
particular one is referred to, I believe, in T.A. Heslop, "Attitudes
to the Visual Arts: The Evidence from Written Sources," in The Age of
Chivalry, ed. Jonathan Alexander and Paul Binski, exh. cat. (London,
1987), pp. 26 ff.
Cheers,
Jim
