Ah this is a case where Larry can actually contribute soemthing useful to
this list
I happen to know that some of the records of the DIG reside at the modern
records centre at Warwick University having been deposited there by Dr Fred
Reid an activist with the National Federation of the Blind. When I accessed
these many years ago to broaden my knowledge of the antecedents of varios
organisations, I think I was the only one who had ever done so. I believe it
was as you say late 60's to erly 70's that it flourished,
I think it lost a lot of respect at the time when major changes to benefits
were being proposed, the Norman Fowler Review I believe. This was the time
when the Independant living fund was created supposedly to compensate for
all the additional payments which went with supplementary benefit which were
increasingly being won by claimants organisations. It was the first of
subsequent Government attempts to claw back at the benefits system which
continues to the present day under a hypocritical labor government.
At that time I think DIG sided with the enemy in co-operating and
administrating the ILF. It is a similar situation to that we have found with
organisations of disabled people accepting social services funding to
administer or assist with direct payments. Poacher turning gamekeeper I
think is the phrase that people use in these circumstances.
