But realistically or ideally? Franciscans may have worn a range
of kinda-brown habits. The artist, desiring the beholder to
readily identify his subjects, will paint all the habits a
uniform brown, just as he has saints carry around the ojbects
with which they are associated, so they don't have to be
labeled.
