medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am interested in the canonisation of Aelred of Rievaulx and was wondering
if there are any articles written on the subject. Powicke (editor of
Aelred's Life) doesn't seem to mention it. The date of Aelred's
canonisation seems to be given as 1191, but I have found references
(admittedly on the Web) that Aelred's canonisation was never sanctioned
officially.
The reason for my interest is whether his canonisation was part of a
jockeying for position between the Cistercians and other religious in
Yorkshire or more widely in England. (I am aware of earlier such disputes
in York (especially between Murdac and William who was to be the next
Archbishop of York)). Any references about Aelred or regional/national
Cistercian disputes in the latter part of the 12th century would be
gratefully received.
