medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. January) is the feast day of:
Devota (d. c. 304) Devota was martyred under Diocletian, at Macinaggio
(Corsica). She is the patron of Monaco and Corsica.
Natalis (6th cent.) Natalis was an Irish monk. He worked with Columcille,
and is claimed as the founder of monasticism in northern Ireland.
Alruna of Cham (d. 1045) Alruna was married to a Bavarian count and, when
widowed, became a recluse at Niederaltaich. She won popular fame as a
spiritual counsellor.
John of Warneton (blessed) (d. 1130) John was a native of French Flanders.
He became a canon regular near Arras, and in time bishop of Therouanne---a
position he refused to accept until the pope insisted. J. was an active
founder of monasteries and noted for his strictness (although he refused to
prosecute some people who tried to murder him).
Angela Merici (d. 1540) Angela was born near Lake Garda (Italy), was
orphaned at an early age, and became a Franciscan tertiary. Soon she and
several companions set to work educating poor girls. They put themselves
under the patronage of St. Ursula, but didn't take formal vows. This was
the beginning of the order of Ursuline nuns, formed into a congregation in
1565---it took that long for the Church to approve the idea of unenclosed
and mobile female religious.
