Subject: Bioterrorism
As the season of good will to all men starts to fade I wonder if now is the
time to open the debate on Bioterrorism.
A few disquieting issues have focused my mnd on what's possibly ahead:
1) NEJM December 19th: To help to inform the debate about smallpox
vaccination a number of articles have been published early at www.nejm.org.
The full text is available no charge and will appear in the January 30,
2003, issue of the Journal.
2) In Prague 2 weeks ago I watched CNN and 71% of a poll believed that war
with Iraq was inevitable
3) Perhaps reading to much into it but recent versions of ER (for those of
you who do not watch this superb drama) included Abby's brother appearing in
Chicago unannounced on a confidential high security mission for the
military, and there was the line by Carter after the recent smallpox
programme where he said 'I suppose you wont tell me if this was a deliberate
release',to which there was no reply.
It seems to me that the Americans are gearing up for war more seriously than
the Europeans who are just as likely to be the recipients of primary target
bioterrorism hits. There will be significant implications for Emergency
Medicne departments, not least the implications of dealing with false
alarms, as with Anthrax last year.
Are we ready ?
John Ryan
