"And I didn't mean to imply that **all** designers were trained as artists. But rather that those who **were**, might be likely to feel their discipline under hostile scrutiny from others who fancy "articulate theory", "systematic enquiry", "reliable bodies of general knowledge" (in short science) more than, say, "nerve", "a sense of Genius Loci", "compositional unity" (in short art)."
Art training is very different to industrial design training. Industrial designers study different subjects. In fact my undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Science in Industrial design which doesn't imply any art training. Industrial design is about factories and workers and consumers and the environment. An artist could say what art is about but I can say that it is something different. Unfortunately designers are victims of Museum curators who take what we design and try to pass it off as art. Though there are a few exceptions
People with purely art or engineering backgrounds usually do not design commercially successful consumer products.
