Jane,
Take the above as it might be pronounced, and it could be fireman, i.e. the
man who would ignite accumulations of methane (fire-damp) prior to work
commencing, but that was an old practice perhaps not used beyond the 1850s.
Someone better informed on coal mining practice might like to comment on that.
