Education Consultant: Understanding Slavery

Education Consultant
We are actively seeking an education consultant to develop KS3 History and Citizenship resources for teachers and students as well as teacher training materials on the subject matter of this project. Building on teacher and student consultation planned for September 2003, the role will involve close liaison with the project manager and project partners to ensure current best practice in teaching and learning sensitive issues in a classroom and Museum environment is addressed.
Project information
The Understanding Slavery Initiative is a consortia project co-ordinated by the National Maritime Museum with the following partners:
* National Maritime Museum (NMM)
* South-west pathfinder Regional Museum Hub (Bristol City Museums & Art Gallery and the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum)
* National Museums Liverpool
* London Regional Museum Hub
* London Museums, Libraries and Archives Council
It is an innovative and significant project which seeks to engage panels of school teachers and children in developing programmes which use the history of slavery and its social, economic and cultural context to support the KS2 and 3 History and Citizenship curricula, raising awareness of our heritage and exploring our shared social responsibilities today. The impact of this audience participation will be maximised by a dynamic programme to share the results and expertise gained with the wider community and the cultural sector through community networks, Regional Hub Museums, regional agencies, the UKMCS and other networks.
Scope of the job
* To devise and produce printed and online learning materials for teachers and students using KS3 History and Citizenship.
* To develop teacher training days and materials which increase the self-confidence and ability of teachers to deliver this subject matter in the classroom.
* To work with the Project Manager, Head of Formal Learning and NMM to ensure the results of the research and development are shared with the regional partners and the NMM schools team, and are available to inform their development of taught sessions and a handling collection.
* To attend a total of 2 project meetings in Bristol and Liverpool.
* To complete progress reports as required for the project steering group.
* To attend development meetings at NMM as required.
Working relationships
* To liaise with the Understanding Slavery project team at NMM - particularly the Head of Formal Learning and the Collections Interpretation Officer - and the inter-regional project steering group and overall project manager.
* To consult with the Curatorial team to understand the scope of the NMM collection.
* To consult with colleagues within the Education and Interpretation Department.
* To build on existing national Maritime Museum contacts and networks. To develop the KS3 History and Citizenship teaching and learning resources for schools at the National Maritime Museum in consultation with other museums, galleries and cultural organisations.
* To manage the production and printing of the resources.
* To work with the Education and Online Projects Departments to deliver the online component of the learning resources for teachers and students.
* To manage the budget allocated for the design and production of the resources for students and teachers.
Personal Specification
* Excellent writing skills.
* Experience of working with formal learning audiences in a museum, gallery or community capacity.
* Experience of using creative approaches to inspire and engage school-aged
* children in learning and meet the requirements of the National Curriculum.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Ability to devise training and resources for teachers.
* Ability to work with others and deliver to time, quality and within budget.
* A clear ability to recognise and manage the sensitivities associated with this subject matter.
* An inclusive and creative approach to exploring cultural diversity.
* Available to work three days per week between September- March 2004.
