GLANELY GALLERY FACILITATOR, NATURAL SCIENCES, NMGW

The Glanely Gallery provides an informal area where the general public can
access and handle objects from the collections guided by expert staff.
We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, creative and motivated
facilitator with well-developed communication skills to join the team.
As the first point of contact for visitors you will be required to respond
to enquiries and guide exploration of the public access collection. You
will also assist in the preparation and running of events and activities
and in developing new materials for the gallery.
A degree in natural sciences and or equivalent work experience in a similar
working environment and the ability to communicate fluently through the
medium of Welsh and English are essential for the Natural Science
Facilitator.

(Natural Sciences)
Background
The National Museums & Galleries of Wales (NMGW) was founded by Royal
Charter in 1907. It derives its funding in the main from Government grant
through the Welsh Assembly Government, as an Assembly Sponsored Public Body
(ASPB).
NMGW operates on six sites across Wales. These include the National Museum
& Gallery at Cathays Park, Cardiff; the Museum of Welsh Life at St. Fagans;
the Welsh Slate Museum at Llanberis; the Museum of the Welsh Woollen
Industry at Dre-fach; the Roman Legionary Museum at Caerleon and Big Pit
Mining Museum, Blaenafon. In addition, NMGW has off-site storage facilities
at the Collection Centre, Nantgarw and negotiations are currently underway
on the development of a new Welsh Industrial & Maritime Museum in Swansea
(in partnership with the City and County of Swansea).
The Glanely Gallery is a busy, hands-on resource located within the
National Museum and Gallery of Wales. It provides an opportunity for
visitors to access collections first hand and provides information and
assistance with enquiries. As part of the Education Department Glanely
works with a wide range of educational groups of all ages, interests and
abilities and seeks to encourage new audiences as well as maintaining
existing visitors. The gallery is currently staffed by one fulltime and one
part time facilitator and a Gallery manager. The gallery provides a link
between the collections and the public and between the public and the
expertise within the museum.
Purpose of the Post
The facilitators are the first line of communication with visitors to the
Glanely Gallery. They provide information on the collections and NMGW and
assist the visitor in using the collections in the gallery. The
facilitators often lead practical workshops and demonstrations, and they
run many activities aimed at a wide range of audiences. Enthusiasm and
subject expertise will be essential in stimulating visitors to explore the
museum, and collections further.

Key Responsibilities of the Post:
• Provide information on the collections and work of NMGW to visitors.
• Facilitate public access to the collections by providing accurate
and relevant information
• Present and assist in developing gallery events and activities
• Provide information and specimens to support curatorial,
conservation and education staff in presenting gallery events
• Keep abreast of topical issues relevant to the Gallery
• Support the Gallery Manager in preparing displays and contributing
ideas to the gallery events programme
• Develop a working knowledge of all collections in the gallery with
particular responsibility for their own subject specialisms
• Work with representatives of the BioSyb department to ensure the
continuing relevance of Glanely content
• Provide a high standard of customer care to Gallery visitors
Skills and Experience:
• Degree, or equivalent experience in the natural sciences.
• Effective presentation skills to audiences with a wide knowledge
and ability range
• Commitment to and enthusiasm for communicating subject specialism
• Ability to work independently and within a team
• Good IT skills
• Willingness to broaden knowledge and learn new skills

Salary: The salary will be in the range of £17,000 - £20,845
Working Hours: Will include working at weekends and Bank Holidays.
Annual Leave: 27 days on appointment, arising to 32 days after 10 years
service plus one privilege day at Christmas.
Superannuation: NMGW has its own pension scheme, which is a final salary
scheme.
Probation: The post is subject to a probationary period of 6 months.
Retirement: The normal age of retirement for NMGW staff is 60.
Medical Report: Appointment will be subject to the receipt of a satisfactory
medical report.
