Evaluation of the impact of the Museums & Galleries Education Programme (MGEP)
Phase II on teachers and support staff in the North East
As part of a national investment by DfES £1m, NEMLAC was awarded £100,000 by
Resource and DfES to deliver Phase II of the Museums & Galleries Education Fund
in the North East of England in August 2002. The funding has allowed NEMLAC to
support 11 projects and part-fund 3 full-time Education Officer posts. MGEP
ends in March 2004. The overall aim of the NEMLAC proposal is to ensure that
more school pupils (5 - 16) can benefit from access to the objects and
collections of museums and galleries across the North East of England.
Evaluation of the whole national Programme is being undertaken by the
University of Warwick, with support in the North East from Andrew Newman at
Newcastle University. Individual projects also have evaluation in-built. The
impact on teachers and other school staff has only been fully explored with
about half the projects. NEMLAC therefore wishes to appoint an experienced
evaluator to:
collate and analyse qualitative data about the impact of MGEP on teachers and
support staff involved in MGEP projects (using the objectives and outcomes
described here, and within the LIRP Generic Learning Outcomes framework)
gather additional evidence from teachers, adults and school staff on the impact
of their involvement in the MGEP projects
interview selected staff participating in the MGEP projects, which will be
chosen in consultation with the venues and NEMLAC
produce a report describing the successes, weaknesses and impact of the
projects, including recommendations for how, in the future, similar National
Curriculum museum and gallery education projects could better support the
development of teachers' expertise, confidence and professional satisfaction.
A large amount of relevant material has already been created as part of the
Programme. Warwick University have looked in depth at six projects; we would
like the evaluator to undertake further analysis on approximately six more
projects. This will require establishing contacts with teachers and school
staff, so the successful applicant will be expected to consult with a selection
of the staff and schools involved to complete their final report, and liaise
closely with Warwick University.
This evaluation will support the overall NEMLAC Strategic objective to support
learning within the sector and be a useful tool for other MGEP regional
programmes, for Museum Hub partners and for the general museum education and
teaching professions.
Fee: £3,000 (approx. 15 days' work) + expenses (£200)
Timescale: work will be undertaken between late January and end March 2004.
