Background

The North East Regional Archives Council was established in 1999 following an
initiative of the National Council on Archives. The membership of the North
East Regional Archives Council comprises representatives of all the local
authorities who run archive services (Co. Durham, Tyne & Wear, Teesside,
Northumberland and Berwick upon Tweed), the Association of Chief Archivists in
Local Government, the British Association for Local History, the British
Records Association, the Consortium of University Research Libraries and the
standing Conference of National and University Libraries (both of which
represent university archives), the Federation of Family History
Societies, the North East England History Institute, the Royal Historical
Society, the Society of Archivists, the Film Archive Forum and private archives
in the region. Resource and NEMLAC are also partners.
Outline:
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced educational specialist to
inform the creation of a strategy that can help transform the role of archives
education in the North East. NERAC has been awarded a NEMLAC Strategic
Development Grant to review the current use of regional Archive education
services and their potential in the school and youth (5 - 16 year olds) market.
NERAC wishes to appoint an education specialist to extensively consult with
NERAC members, schools, LEAs and other partners as appropriate to prepare a
major report recommending realistic steps to develop archive education services.
It is envisaged that the consultant will be based in the North East to liaise
closely with project members in the region.
Job Purpose:
To research the current use of archive services and their resources by schools,
pupils, teachers, youth groups and LEAs in the region.
To research the current and future needs and expectations of the education
sector in relation to archives.
To research the needs and expectations of the archives sector in responding to
the needs of schools, pupils and young people.
To explore ways in which education services offered by archives can be enhanced
and expanded.
To make recommendations, based on this research, to NERAC and NEMLAC on the
future directions of archive education services in the region.
To support the development of a regional archive education strategy
Main tasks:
1. To map current provision of archive education services
2. To carry out a SWOT analysis of current archives education across the region
in consultation with NERAC members and schools, LEAs and young people. (c. 15
days)
3. To meet with teachers, LEA advisers, pupils, Governors and support teachers
to discuss current awareness of Archive resources and how these may be
appropriately and realistically developed to meet the needs of schools and
pupils. (c. 10 days)
4. To meet with archive staff and, where necessary, colleagues in associated
sectors (e.g. local study librarians and museums officers), to discuss the
current and future role of archives in relation to the needs of schools and
pupils (c. 10 days)
4. To produce and present a final report of findings, including
recommendations for short, medium and long-term activities, which can form the
basis of a strategy to develop and improve archive education services (c. 10
days)
Timescale:
45 days in total between August 2003 and February 2004
Location
NERAC/NEMLAC region; some travel outside of region may be expected
Reporting to:
NERAC/NEMLAC steering committee
Fee:
45 days at £180 per day (Total £8,100 gross) plus expenses
Application Process:
The successful candidate will have a good knowledge of the education sector and
the national curriculum. You will be familiar with archive services and,
ideally, have experience of working in an archive, library or museum. You
should possess good written and verbal communication skills, be able to take an
analytical approach and see the big picture regarding the potential of archive
resources in the school sector. Please write a letter of application, with a
