Dear Ed, I cannot offer you any help for the former. I normally order my
videos and Video Compact Discs through Asiandb.com or annyoung.com, which
are the two websites offering a good collection of South Korean films, and
maybe those North Korean films which are marketed overseas. As for the
second part, I think a good representation of films from the South and North
would include Im Kwon-Taek's films, such as "The Taebak Mountains",
"Sopyonje". You may also want to check out "Spring in My Hometown" which
focuses on the devastating effects of the Korean War on the lives of
villagers, or Yi Chang-Dong's "Peppermint Candy" which touches on the
devastating effects of the 1980 Kwangju Massacre, or others like "A single
spark". There is a large list of titles I can come up with about this, and I
am also in the midst of coming up with a review of "Joint Security Area",
directed by Park Chan-Uk, and another longer article on the film in relation
to two or three others, such as "Shiri", "Musa", and either "Comrade" or
"Sympathy for Mr Vengeance". (For these articles, I will send you the
relevant information when they are published early next year or later
November.) You may also want to check out the current remake of
"Arirang"(2003), which was screened both in the North and the South, and may
mark a border-crossing event in Korean film for this century. Hope it helps
you.
Sincerely,
Kevin
