I did a four year B.Ed (Primary Education) at the University of Northumbria
from 1991 - 95, specialising in History and Geography, and we worked with
Tyne and Wear Museums, went on visits to Hadrians Wall and other sites, to
learn from staff and to gather ideas of how to work with sites as teachers.
We also developed resource packs for various sites as part of our
coursework. I think the member of archives staff that someone was thinking
of is probably Peter Hepplewhite.
I would also like to ask the group's opinion on a matter of professional
development.
As I have stated above, I have got my B.Ed in Primary Education,
specialising in history and geography, and following graduation spent three
years teaching. I then left teaching to pursue my main interest in museums
education - working in a number of museums in the North East. I have
sucessfully completed a MGEP project for North Tyneside Council, and am now
a temporary Assistant Museums Officer - a post whose responsibilities are
split betwen collections management and learning and access. The advice and
opinions I seek are about developing and consolidating my experience with an
MA in Museum Studies - I would like to do one but cannot afford to take a
year out of employment to complete one, and pay for the fees, and can I get
another job in my chosen field without one, and hope my employer would
sponsor me? I am competing for jobs that are few and far between with MA
graduates - I have the experience and knowledge but not the qualification.
Can you see my dilemma?
Please help!!
All opinions and advice is gratefully received,
Sarah
