Hi there,
I've just had this discussion with some of the freelancers I used this
summer for activity workshops. Some - who work on their own all the time and
a lot with schools have had themselves enhanced CRB checked - others believe
the people who employ them should cop the cost!!!! But if you work for more
than one museum, EH or the NT who pays??!!?? So basically this is going to
be an argument between museums and some
re- enactors/freelancers indefinitely unless we get some definite ruling.
Anyway if you are a freelancer please contact Richard York on
[log in to unmask] he managed to get himself checked and is happy
to pass the information on to others who need to know where to go as
self-employed.
However as a small museum we obviously do not have the funding to check
people other than paid staff especially as the cost went up to nearly £40
from £12 for enhanced checks in July!! Therefore those who are checked will
be used and those who are not will not.
Because from October 2004, we will all be legally required to CRB any member
of staff or volunteer who will be working on a face-to-face basis with
children, young people or vulnerable adults - therefore all staff and
volunteers working with work experience students will need to be screened as
well - i.e office staff, library staff and volunteers, reception and so on.
Checks on volunteers are FREE - although you may be charged an
administration cost by an umbrella body you use. Apparently the YMCA in
Bournemouth are a very good umbrella organisation and have some of the
cheapest admin charges. I was checked by SPLASH here in Wiltshire.
If you want to screen a volunteer or member of staff then you are also
legally required to have that individual's written consent.
Well anyway good luck everyone with this and any new info. anyone please do
pass to GEM.
