medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. October) is the feast day of:
Salome of Galilee (1st cent.) Salome was a follower of Jesus, the wife of
Zebedee, and the mother of James and John. She was among the women who
stood at the cross, and according to John's gospels was one of the
witnesses to the resurrection on Easter Monday.
Philip of Heraclea (d. 304) Philip was an old man and bishop of Heraclea
(Thrace) when Diocletian's persecution broke out. He submitted to the
closure of his church with the comment that God dwells within human hearts,
not within walls. He was also willing to give up his church's sacred
vessels, but not the Scriptures. Philip and his deacon (Hermes) were then
scourged and the books were seized. The two then refused to perform an act
of worship to the gods of the state. They were ordered on three occasions
to submit---and beaten when they refused, imprisoned for seven months, and
finally burned to death.
Donatus (d. 876) Donatus was an Irish monk who went on pilgrimage to Rome
and on his way home was elected bishop of Fiesole (c. 829). He was a
scholar and teacher, led his diocese's troops against the Saracens, and one
the right to hold his own court. Donatus also founded a hospice for Irish
pilgrims (dedicated to St. Brigid).
Bertharius of Montecassino (d. 884) Bertharius was abbot of Montecassino
and a noted author and poet. He was killed in his own monastic church by
raiding Saracens.
