The Ussher Society is pleased to announce its 41st Anniversary Conference at the Mountbatten centre, Plymouth, UK. This is a three day conference for earth and environmental scientists and engineers, with a joint session held with the South West Regional Group of the Geological Society of London.
The main conference presentation days will be Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th January and oral or poster presentations are welcomed in all areas of geology, geomorphology, engineering geology and environmental geology related to South West England. The keynote Scott Simpson lecture will be presented by Professor John Dewey, University of California, Davis on "Relative Plate Motion, Structures and Rock Fabrics" as part of a general theme covering "Advances in understanding the Variscan Orogeny". The conference will also include a joint, half-day session with the SW Regional Group of the Geological Society on "Radiogenics/Natural Radiation in SW England". Papers in areas related to these themes are particularly welcomed. Presenting authors have the opportunity to submit their paper for publication, subject to peer review, in the Society's journal, Geoscience in south-west England.
A field trip has been organised for Sunday 5th January, examining Devonian and Quaternary sequence stratigraphy of Croyde Bay, North Devon, led by Dr. Matthew Watkinson, University of Plymouth. An additional trip being considered will examine the Quaternary geomorphology of the South Devon Coast, and will be run by members of the Quaternary Research Group at the University of Plymouth.
