medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
[The Baltimore Book of Prayers] A Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Catholic Laity, prepared and enjoined by order of the Third Plenary Concil of Baltimore (Baltimore, 1889; reprinted as The Baltimore Book of Prayers, Fort Collins, Colorado: Roman Catholic Books, 1996)
is a useful compendium with English translations in the public domain that includes those medieval prayers and devotions that remained in active use in modern Catholicism (Te Deum, Rosary etc.) It includes also the text of the Mass, requiem Masses, prayers for deathbed occasions, morning office etc.
For the standard sequences (Vexilla regis, Pange lingua, Adoro te devote) etc. for Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Corpus Christi] you can readily get public domain English translations in the standard pre-Vatican II missals, e.g., Fr. Lachance's missal, the _New Marian Missal_ etc. Several of these are available in reprint editions from various publishers. The New Marian Missal, for instance, has been reprinted by Veritas Press, Granada Hills, CA, though the sorts of small presses doing these reprints go in and out of business and may not always list their publications in Books in Print.
One ought not neglect _The Westminster Hymnal_ (reprinted by Roman Catholic Books, Fort Collins, Colorado, www.catholicreform.org and www.booksforcatholics.com and Adrian Fortescue's _Latin Hymns_ as sources for medieval devotional texts with English translations. Now that I think of it, I suppose that the ones that have been reprinted are no longer in public domain, but the exact status of these varies from item to item, I would think. You can find library copies of the original early 20thc editions. Others on the list who know more about copyright law might have advice as to whether one may legitimately post from the early 20thc edition even though a more recent reprint exists. My sense is that many of the reprinting publishers are themselves using public domain material and do not in fact own any copyright to them, so their books may be reused. However, my copy of the New Marian Missal by Veritas Press does contain an "all rights reserved notice" on the verso of the title page.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
For reasons outside my comprehension, my pastor has selected me to provide
the content for our congregation's contemplated web site.
I wish to provide a selection of prayers for the use of those who access
the site. Anyone who can point me to collections (in the public domain)
of English translations of medieval prayers will do me the great service
of allowing me to avoid re-inventing the wheel. (I already have that
wonderful old standby, the 1892 Episcopalian Book of Common Prayer.)
All help will be most gratefully received, not only by me, but by my
pastor who has assigned this task to me in fear and trembling, as a last
resort, all others having sensibly avoided it.
Since this is hardly a matter of academic priority, off-list replies make
good sense in this case.
Yours in gratitude,
Frank
