medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. October) is the feast day of:
Cassius and Florence (d. c. 300) These saints were martyred in Bonn
(Germany). Already in the fourth century a church was built in their honor
in the cemetery beyond the town walls. It is not, however, completely
clear who C and F were. They may have died in Diocletian's persecution,
but perhaps they were companions of Mauritius and the Theban Legion.
Gereon and companions (d. 304?) Gereon and Co. were martyrs of Cologne.
Gregory of Tours reports that these fifty men were soldiers of the Theban
Legion; a marvellous romanesque church in Cologne is dedicated to Gereon.
Paulinus of York (d. 644) Paulinus was one of the second group of monks
sent to England by Gregory the Great. He became the first (Roman)
missionary in Northumbria, accompanying princess Ethelburga of Kent when
she married King Edwin of Northumbria. Paulinus became the first bishop of
York, but was driven out when Edwin was killed in battle. He acted as
bishop of Rochester for the rest of his life.
Tuto of Regensburg (d. 930) Tuto was abbot of St. Emmeram's, Regensburg
and in 894 became bishop of the city. He was an advisor of Emperor Arnulf,
and also supported Duke Wenceslas in the Christianization of Bohemia.
Daniel (d. 1227) Daniel was a Franciscan friar who went to preach
Christianity in Morocco. He was martyred in Ceuta in 1227.
