co-incidentally(?) "Count Louis of Chartres brought the precious relic of the
head of Saint Anne away from the sack of Constantinople in 1204. Countess
Catherine gave it to the Cathedral, and all writers on the iconography of
Chartres attribute Saint Anne's prominence there to this donation. See A.
Katzenellenbogen, The Sculptural Programs of Chartres Cathedral (Baltimore,
Md.: 1959), p. 62."
elements of her cult were given a prominent place in the iconography of the
North central portal of the new cathedral.
surely her association with conception/childbirth would have made Chartres
something of a "doubleheader," pilgrimage-wise.
i'd not thought of that before.
from various websites, i note that Aix-la-Chapelle/Aachen also claimed to have
a head of Ste. Anne --significant because Aachen also had a nightgown of the
B.V.M. which looked remarkably like the one at Chartres.
the Aachen-Chartres connection needs to be examined in greater detail, because
i'm a *long* way from getting it straight.
