Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds like Francis took things a step further
than most people (didn't he always!). I've found references to fasts before
the Assumption and before Michaelmas. I gather that in at least some
Orthodox churches, a fast still precedes the feast of the Dormition (aka
Assumption).
I'm getting the impression that a lot of dates that in pre-Christian times
were associated with feasting, became associated with fasting in Christian
times, at least in Celtic areas.
