Appraisal of Annual Library Plans and approch to the Public Library
Standards 2001
Since 1998, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has
requiredall library authorities to produce an Annual Library Plan
(ALP),which includes standing information about their library service, along
with reviews of past performance and strategies, targets forcurrent and
future years and, from 2001, a report on their position against the public
library standards.
This report is our appraisal of 2001 ALPs. Overall, the quality of Plans has
much improved since they wereintroduced in 1998. This is a positive
development, indicative of the increased importance that library authorities
are attaching to their duties. This is clearly demonstrated in that, for the
firsttime, all library authorities have submitted either a Goodčor
Satisfactory Plan with none assessed as Poorč or Unacceptableč
