There is such a thing as a Free Pint!
William Hann, Founder and Managing Editor, on Free Pint - What it is,
where it has come from, where it is going.
Venue: The Ebbisham Centre, 6-7 Derby Square, Epsom, Surrey KT19 8AG
(location of the new Epsom Library)
Wednesday 22nd May 2002, 6.30pm for 7.15pm (A light buffet is available
from 6.30pm. The SLAIG AGM takes place from 7.15-7.30 pm)
Based around a newsletter and a lively Website, Free Pint, the Online
Community of Information Researchers, is a phenomenon. Promoted mostly by
word of mouth, it now has more than 47,000 subscribers, and an enviable
reputation as an essential - and entertaining - resource for information
workers.
Free Pint, by its imaginative use of e-mail and the World Wide Web, has
cracked the age-old library and information sector challenge - how do
information researchers share the benefit of all their skill and hard work
with their colleagues? Free Pint enables information researchers to work
collaboratively, ask and answer questions, review and recommend favourite
links and resources. There is a special section for students, a job
market, and even a nostalgia section - Free Pint Gold.
William Hann, Managing Editor, will tell us about Free Pint, how it
started, what it has become, and where it is going - with some reflections
along the way on what might have been.
This presentation is a must for anyone who has shared aspirations to see
the Internet encourage and enable new ways of working in the Library and
Information Sector. For those who already know and love Free Pint, it is a
chance to meet William Hann, founder and editor, and find out more about
what inspired him. Those who do not know Free Pint - check it out, on
www.freepint.com - and come along!
